Description
FRIAR’S HEAD GOLF CLUB, established in 2003, is located at Riverhead, New York and designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in collaboration with 1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Ken Bakst. The name Friar’s Head originates from what 19th-century merchant sailors saw from their ships; a bald dune top with a ring of vegetation further down, resembling a monk’s head looming above the shoreline. The course is routed through wooded dunes and former farmland, where the challenge was to design some holes in breathtaking sand dunes perched 200 feet above Long Island Sound and other holes on an ordinary potato field. Their solution was to move the routing back and forth and to artfully reshape the farm fields into gentle links like land. continued..
