Description
PINEHURST RESORT, established in 1897, is located in Pinehurst, North Carolina, USA. Pinehurst was founded by Boston soda fountain magnate James Walker Tufts who purchased 5,500 acres (22 km2) for approximately $1.25 per acre in 1895. Tufts, commissioned Donald J. Ross, a golf course architect who cut his golfing teeth at Royal Dornoch in Scotland, and the first golf course was laid out in 1897/98. Donald J. Ross was to stay on at Pinehurst for a further 48 years and Pinehurst’s best known course, ‘Pinehurst No. 2’ was completed in 1907 to designs by Ross, who said that the course was ‘The fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed’. continued..
