Description
PORTMARNOCK GOLF CLUB, established in 1894, is located in Portmarnock, County Dublin, Ireland. On Christmas Eve in 1893 William Pickeman, a Scottish insurance broker and George Ross rowed across the sea from Sutton to the peninsular to explore the possibility of creating a golf links. In those days the peninsula, which is about two miles long and covers over 500 acres, could only be safely reached by boat. The land belonged to the distiller John Jameson who from around 1850 had used the links as the company’s private golf course. The course designed by William Pickeman opened in1894 with nine holes which was extended to eighteen holes in 1896. continued..
