Description
ROYAL BIRKDALE GOLF CLUB, established in 1889, is located in Southport, England and was founded on July 30, 1889, when nine members formed themselves into the ‘Birkdale Golf Club’. The original 9 hole course opened for play in October 1889 in the Shaw Hills near Bedford Park. By 1897, the club had moved to its present location where 18 holes were laid out by George Lowe, the professional at nearby Royal Lytham & St Annes. Birkdale was laid out alongside the coast by Lowe amid towering dunes, but the challenging Lancashire links only came of age after an update during the 1930s by five times Open champion J.H. Taylor and respected architect Fred Hawtree. continued..
