ROYAL DORNOCH GOLF CLUB, established in 1877, is located in Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland. It was established in 1877 but there are written records showing that golf was played at Dornoch as early as 1616, long before its first nine-hole golf club was founded. Expenses covering the cost of a young aristocrat’s golf clubs in 1616 have provided the earliest evidence so far of the sport’s presence in Dornoch. John, the 13th Earl of Sutherland, was sent to the town in Sutherland to be educated. The reference was uncovered by researcher Wade Cormack which makes Dornoch the world’s third oldest golf course (behind St. Andrews and Leith). continued..
