ROYAL ST. GEORGE’S GOLF CLUB, established in 1887, is located in Sandwich, Kent, England. The club was founded by Laidlaw Purves, a Scottish-born surgeon who designed the course at Royal St Georges and was a prime mover in introducing the rules of handicapping into British golf. Royal St. George’s (also known as ‘Sandwich’) is one of the most difficult courses in the world. Huge sand hills come into play, especially on the front nine, with the largest of these standing guard to the right of the demanding par-4 4th hole. This is a 2-story bunker shored up by railway sleepers called ‘The Himalayas’ and is one of the most intimidating sights in UK golf. continued..
